CHAROLAIS GENETICS SELECTED FOR COMMERCIAL OUTCOMES

Glenlea Charolais are bred to improve productivity and profitability in real beef production systems. Selection focuses on balanced performance traits that support consistent growth, maternal efficiency and carcass value across varied environments and markets.

WHAT PERFORMANCE MEANS AT GLENLEA

At Glenlea, performance is defined by outcomes that matter commercially:

  • Efficient growth to target weights
  • Cattle that maintain condition and perform on pasture
  • Quiet temperament suited to practical handling
  • Reliable carcass performance across feeder and finished markets

Balanced genetics are prioritised over single-trait extremes to support long-term herd productivity.

Traits Selected for Commercial Results

Selection at Glenlea targets growth efficiency, structural soundness, temperament, maternal performance and carcass traits aligned to commercial market requirements.

Polled genetics are prioritised to support safer handling, improved welfare and labour efficiency. All Glenlea stud sires are polled and the majority homozygous polled.

Breeding decisions are guided by BREEDPLAN EBVs, ultrasound data and benchmarking against breed averages to drive measurable genetic progress.

The trends below compare Glenlea performance with the Charolais breed average across three key indicators of commercial profitability - 600 Day Weight, Northern Maternal Index and P8 Fat.

PROVEN GENETIC PROGRESS

600 Day Weight

Higher EBVs reflect selection for faster growth and heavier weights earlier, supporting improved turn-off and overall herd productivity.

Northern Maternal Index

This index compares whole-of-herd profitability in northern breeding systems. Above-average performance supports fertility, maternal efficiency and lifetime productivity.

P8 Fat

Positive trends indicate improved doing ability, fertility support and finishing reliability under variable seasonal and northern production conditions.

BUILT ON FEMALES THAT WORK

The Glenlea cow herd has been developed over decades for fertility, longevity and adaptability in practical beef production environments.

Commercially reliable bulls start with females selected for maternal efficiency, structural soundness and the ability to perform consistently across varied production systems.

RED FACTOR WITHIN THE GLENLEA PROGRAM

Red Factor genetics have been incorporated within the Glenlea breeding program for decades and are selected under the same performance benchmarks applied across the entire herd.

For northern and Bos indicus-influenced systems, Red Factor genetics can support colour consistency and market alignment, while maintaining the growth, structure, maternal and carcass performance expected of Glenlea cattle.

At Glenlea, colour supports performance - it never replaces it.
